Bringing Chemistry to Medicine Symposium

UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program 2020, An undergraduate summer research program in science and biotechnology.

We are very pleased to announce that UTokyo will continue to provide hands-on laboratory experience to undergraduate students through the Amgen Scholars Program in 2020 as one of the host universities of Amgen Scholars Asia Program (https://amgenscholars.com/asia-program ).

The objective of the program is to provide undergraduate students from different countries, including Japan, who are committed to or who are considering a career in biology or related sciences and planning to continue to graduate studies, with eight weeks (from June 9 to August 8, 2020, including Amgen Scholars Asia Symposium) of biomedical research experience in the basic and translational sciences. Opportunities for the students to gain valuable hands-on experience in research will be provided by 15 research laboratories in six of the graduate schools and research institutes of UTokyo (Graduate School of Medicine, Graduate School of Science, Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Institute of Industrial Science).

Additionally, there will be opportunities for the students to take part in events, such as Japanese cultural events, exchange events with UTokyo students, etc., organized to maximize their experience as Amgen Scholars at UTokyo.

Each Amgen Scholars will receive a stipend to cover their return travel and living expenses, in addition to paid accommodation, during the program.

UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program applicants must be undergraduate students who are:
- Enrolled in colleges or universities worldwide that award a bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent); and
- At the minimum, have completed their first year of undergraduate study at the time the summer program begins, and
- Not graduating before the summer program begins, and will resume their undergraduate studies for at least 1 semester or 1 quarter after the end of the summer program.

UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program applicants must also:
- Have a strong record of academic performance, and
- Have good working knowledge of English, demonstrated by a minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 72, IELTS overall band score of 5.5, Cambridge English FCE, TOEIC L&R score of 785, or TOEIC S&W score of 310, if not a native English speaker or English is not their first language, and
- Have an interest in pursuing a Ph.D.

Application for the program is now open online and will close at 3:00 PM on February 3, 2020 (Japan Standard Time).

University of Groningen and Universidad de Chile’s Matchmaking Event

University of Groningen and Universidad de Chile’s Matchmaking Event is a three-day academic seminar that will gather and researchers from both institutions, thus creating a space where the topics of Data Science & Mathematics, Evolutionary Biology, Infection & Immunity, Neurosciences, Oncology, and Public Health will be presented and discussed.

This event aims to bring together some of the best researchers in Chile and Groningen. It has the specific purpose to identify joint research projects.

Shaping Horizons will gather 150 young leaders from across the UK and Latin America to engage with senior world leaders and discuss common challenges faced by both regions. Some of our featured speakers are: Dr. Robert Muggah (Research Director, Igarape Institute), Prof. Renato Ribeiro (former Minister of Education, Brazil), H.E.R. Carlos Sersale Di Cerisano (Argentine Ambassador in the UK), Sen. Gustavo Petro (former Mayor of Bogotá, Colombia).
 
Future Leaders will also help to create evidence-based policy reports for governments on issues covered during the summit. Furthermore, Future Leaders sharing similar interests will work in groups in order to design and pitch a project related to a particular theme of the summit, feasible enough to be implemented by the Future Leaders in both regions, under mentorship of Cambridge academics and Shaping Horizons partners. Finally, Future Leaders will become part of a bilateral network of leaders tackling some of the most pressing problems faced by the UK and Latin America.

The Faculty of Medicine, Universidad de Chile welcomes new international students.

Undergraduate students from different countries will study at the Faculty of Medicine this first semester. Some of them come for short stays, research internships, and /or medical rotations.

Tripartite academic cooperation Letter of Intent signed by the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Physics and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Chile, and the Hannover Medical School, Germany (MHH).

The Faculties of Medicine, Physics and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Chile, and the Hannover Medical School, Germany (MHH), represented by Prof. Dr. Thomas Lenarz, ENT, Clinical Director representing the Board of Directors of the University of Hannover, signed a Letter of Intent for international collaboration that aims to strengthen academic cooperation. The Letter of Intent includes
a) Visits by the members of each institution, for different periods of time, in accordance with a program to be jointly developed by the three Faculties on topics of common interest.
b) Participation of scientists from faculties and experts from both institutions, in joint activities such as advisory work, courses, seminars, research projects and other collaboration.
c) Use of facilities by graduate students from each institution to conduct research, short stays, and academic collaborations.
Hannover Medical School is among the highest performing universities in Germany. Its achievements in research and teaching in medicine have given the School a leading position among German university clinics. The outstanding research achievements as the only university in Germany with an exclusively medical focus were highlighted by its participation in initiatives of federal and state excellence, where the Medizinische Hochschule Hannover (MHH) was classified as "the most successful university in northern Germany" and "The best university" Clinic at the national level. "It is of a great prestige for the Faculty of Medicine to be associated with such a prestigious institution.”

Delegation of Researchers participate in the IX Seminar in Basic Biomedical Sciences, University of Antioquia, Medellin, Colombia.

November 19/20/21 - Delegation of Researchers from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Chile travel to the University of Antioquia, Medellin, Colombia to participate in the IX Seminar in Basic Biomedical Sciences. Six researchers and academics from the Doctoral Program in Biomedical Sciences and a representative from the Office of International Affairs of the Faculty of Medicine, Universidad de Chile traveled to Colombia to participate in the IX Biomedical Sciences Seminar on November 19 and 20, 2018 at the Headquarters of University Research (SIU), University of Antioquia, Medellin, Colombia. The visit was sponsored by the Faculty of Medicine and the Basic Biomedical Sciences Academic Corporation, University of Antioquia. The participation of the Chilean delegation in the seminar is part of the various joint international activities between both Institutions. Additionally, members of the delegation met with authorities from the University of Antioquia’s Faculty of Medicine with the aim to advance in the development of an agreement that strengthens both universities as part of the University’s South-South internationalization strategy.

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION AT THE GRADUATE LEVEL WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS

Dr. Suarez-Balcazar is professor and head of the Department of Occupational Therapy. She received her PhD from the University of Kansas in Child and Developmental Psychology, with a concentration in Community Psychology. She holds an affiliate appointment in the Department of Psychology at UIC. Her research interest and expertise covers several interrelated areas: development, implementation, and evaluation of community-based healthy lifestyles interventions for youth and young adults with disabilities and their families; the study of cultural competency and its role in addressing health disparities; and the study of community capacity building for evaluation. Her research is conducted within a community-based participatory research approach and empowerment framework. She is currently directing a community engagement research project supported by The Chicago Community Trust in which she is examining the impact of a culturally tailored health promotion community intervention. This work is being conducted in partnership with El Valor. She was elected President-elect of the Society for Community Research and Action (APA, Division 27). Her visit at the Department of Occupational Therapy of our Faculty is part of the internationalization process seeking international collaboration at the graduate level with the University of Illinois.

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION

On Tuesday, September 25, 2018, the Office of International Affairs of the Faculty of Medicine hosted Dr. Juan Iovanna, director of the Department of Translational Medicine and Head of the Center for Cancer Research (CRCM) and faculty member at the Aix Marseille Universite, France. Dr. Iovanna is an expert on pancreatic diseases with emphasis on both experimental and clinical studies from which interesting results have been obtained by analyzing the sample taken from human pancreatic cancer and its sensitivity (or resistance) to the different chemotherapy agents. Dr. Iovanna met with a group of academics and researchers from the Faculty of Medicine to explore international collaboration.

Project for the Internationalization of Research and Doctorates of the University of Chile (UCH-1566)

The Project for the Internationalization of Research and Doctorates of the University of Chile (UCH-1566) has launched a new program titled "Support for the International Teacher's Visit 2018-2019". Applications are due no letter than November 16, 2018.
This program aims to strengthen research, artistic creation, training and networking at the postgraduate level, through short-term visit of international academics to the University of Chile.

WELCOME 32 INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS


The Office of International Affairs welcomes 32 international students under the International Mobility Program of the Faculty of Medicine (PIM). Students come from Argentina, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United States. A total of 49 international students have participated in the mobility program of the Faculty of Medicine between the first and second semester of 2018. The sponsoring schools are Medicine, Nutrition and Dietetics, Obstetrics and Childcare, Nursing and the Institute of Population Health.

CANADIAN UNIVERSITIES CONSORTIUM (CALDO)


On Monday, September 3, 2018, the Office of International Affairs hosted the Canadian Universities Consortium (CALDO) and a representative from the Office for Student and Faculty Mobility of the Embassy of Canada in Chile. The Consortium was created by 10 top Canadian universities and supports Latin American students who wish to undertake research and postgraduate collaboration with any of the consortium university members. The 10 Canadian universities that CALDO represents are: The University of Alberta, Calgary, Dalhousie, Laval, Queen's, Ottawa, Saskatchewan, Toronto, Waterloo and Western.

The objective of the visit is part of the Faculty of Medicine's internationalization efforts to open new opportunities for international exchange and collaboration at the undergraduate, graduate and academic levels. Each university presented their institution and academic programs. The Embassy of Canada in Chile also discussed scholarship programs.
